What is tauheed and what is shirk? I start with the name of Allah. O Allah, we ask you for peace and blessings upon our prophet Muhammad. Most Muslims don’t understand tauheed. They think that their lips must say ‘no God but Allah’, and their bodies must not bow to anyone besides Allah. But tauheed concerns the heart more than it does the body. ‘There is no God but Allah’ is a sum of no and yes. Without saying no to everything besides Allah, you cannot reach Allah. The Quran says on the first page - You alone we worship, and from You alone, we seek help. Did you notice the words, ‘you alone?’ Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (may Allah’s mercy be upon him) says, ‘Beg of Him and do not beg of anyone besides Him. Ask Him for help and do not seek help from anyone besides Him. Trust in Him and do not trust in anyone besides Him.' - 47th discourse in the book, Al Fathah Ar Rabbani, page 281. To understand Tauheed, you must also know what shirk is. They are both opposites. Worship belongs to Allah alone. When you give a share of worship to anyone else, you create a partner with Allah. People don’t know that dua is worship and the peak of worship. Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (may Allah have mercy on him) says in his book, 'shirk can be outer or inner. Outer is the worship of idols, while the inner is to trust creatures and regard them as the source of harm and benefit.' - Al-Fath Ar-Rabbani, 34th discourse, page 212 Shirk happens when you show over-reliance on your material possessions. See Sura Kahf verses 32 and 42. Shirk happens when you obey your desires and disobey Allah. See Quran chapter 45 verse 23, where obedience to desires is equated to worship. (‘Have you seen him who has taken his desires as his god’) Shirk also means to change places. Allah is most important but when you pin your hopes and love on anyone other than Allah, you change His place. This is what the Christians do and what some Muslims do. This is shirk and an unpardonable sin in Islam. . What has the tauheed given humanity? . It released humans from the bondage of other humans (like saints, priests, false gods, and superstitions) and brought them into the service of Allah. Islam means submission to the will of Allah, not your will or anyone else’s or your desires. Submission to God comes from fear of God. . When you consider Allah as the sole source of harm or hurt, you stop fearing the creation and start fearing Allah only. . Dua is worship "The Quran answers on the first page. - ‘You alone we worship, and from You alone, we seek help.' . Hadith Qudsi 8 says that when a worshipper says this verse, He (Allah) says: 'This is between Me and My slave, and My slave shall have what he has asked for.' . I ask you, isn't this verse a proof that a person gets everything directly from Allah." . Seeking help differs in ‘deen’ and ‘duniya.’ Dua is a form of worship that is meant for Allah alone. In worldly matters, you may seek help from others, but avoid insisting. Pious individuals avoid seeking help from others in worldly matters. . One of Allah's name is Al Mustaan. It means 'the one whose help is to be sought.' See Quran surah 12, verse 18. . Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani's (may Allah have mercy on him) says in his book, 'shirk can be outer or inner. Outer is the worship of idols, while the inner is to trust creatures and regard them as the source of harm and benefit.' - Al-Fath Ar-Rabbani, 34th discourse, page 212 . Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him said: dua is itself the worship. (see Riyad as-Salihin 1465). prophet peace be upon him then recited the Quranic verse at chapter 40 verse 60, 'And your Lord (Allah) said: 'pray to me, I will answer you. Verily, those who are proud to worship Me will indeed enter Hell humiliated.'' . Quran chapter 2 verse 186 says, ‘And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], about Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the prayer (dua) of the devotee when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be guided.’ . Can the Holy Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him help us? . see Sura 72, verses 20 to 21 - Say (O' Prophet): 'I pray to only my Lord, and I do not associate with Him anyone. Say (O' Prophet), "I do not have any power to harm or benefit you". . Quran chapter 7 verse 188 - Say (O' Prophet), “I have no power to benefit or protect myself, except by the Will of Allah. If I had known the unknown, I would have benefited myself enormously, and no harm would have ever touched me. I am only the one who warns and deliverers good news for those who believe.” . What does the Quran say about seeking help? . Seek help with patience and prayer. see Quran chapter 2 verse 45 and verse 153 . Seek help from Allah and be patient. Quran chapter 7 verse 128 . What did the Prophet peace be upon him said about seeking help? . Ibn 'Abbas [may Allah be pleased with him] narrated: "I was behind the Prophet (peace be upon him) one day when he said: 'O boy! I will teach you a statement: Be mindful of Allah and He will protect you. Be mindful of Allah and you will find Him before you. When you ask, ask Allah, and when you seek aid, seek Allah's aid. Know that if the entire creation were to gather together to do something to benefit you, you would never get any benefit except that Allah had written for you. And if they were to gather to do something to harm you- you would never be harmed except that Allah had written for you. The pens are lifted and the pages are dried.’” - Tirmidhi 2516 . Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him said, ‘Let one of you ask Allah for his every need until he asks for salt and he asks for the strap of his sandal when it breaks.’-Tirmidhi 3604 What Hazrat Ali [ra] say about seeking help? "Do not seek help or protection from anybody but Allah. Reserve your prayers, your requests, your solicitations, your supplications, and your entreaties [humble request] to Him and Him alone because to grant, to give, to confer and to bestow, as well as to withhold, to deprive, to refuse, and to debar, lies only in His Power. Ask as much of His Blessings and seek as much of His Guidance as you can. [A Letter from Father to Son, The Last Will of Ali ibn Abi Talib (a), al-islam.org] " Hadrat Ali [may Allah be pleased with him] said, “You must not rely upon anyone except the Lord.” Najahul Balagha . What Our Pious Saints said about seeking help? . Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his last sermon, 'Never ask for help, charity or favor from anyone besides Allah.' . Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani (may Allah have mercy on him), said in his book, 'Beg of Him and do not beg of anyone besides Him. Ask Him for help and do not seek help from anyone besides Him. Trust in Him and do not trust in anyone besides Him.' - 47th discourse in the book, Al-Fath Ar-Rabbani written by Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani, page 281. . (I say, Prayer/Salat Fulfills Every Wish) . Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said, The supplication made between the adhan and the iqamah is not rejected.' - Abu Dawud 521 . “It was said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, which supplication is most likely to be listened to?’ He said: ‘(During) the last part of the night, and at the end of the obligatory prayers.’”- Tirmidhi 3499 . We say in every Rakat Sami Allahu Liman Hamidah (Allah listens to the one who praises Him) . Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him said, ‘Our Lord, the Blessed, and the Exalted descends every night to the lowest heaven when one-third of the latter part of the night remains, and says: Who supplicates Me so that I may answer him? Who asks Me so that I may give to him? Who asks Me forgiveness so that I may forgive him?’ Muslim 758a .
